Why Environmental Education

Ibadan, Oyo State capital rightly be acclaimed as the second most developed city in south western Nigeria after Lagos but unfortunately, the state of hygiene seen around the city can be termed as worrisome. The city is the largest capital in Nigeria and it was the fastest growing city in Nigeria as at the time of independence. Despite the development the city has seen over the years, good hygiene and efficient waste management is still hard to come by. It is to this end CleanEdge as one of its mandate has decided to take “safe the environment” campaign to secondary schools in the state as it is believed that the knowledge about environment will reduce the quantity of waste generated. With this initiative, CleanEdge Solutions hope to reach over 200 schools by November ending.

How does it work?

The volunteer’s role is to educate secondary school student in the state on harmful activities affecting the environment, how it can be controlled and how these activities impact climate change and affect our lives. Volunteers will function in four different categories:

Team Leader: who is to lead the team to the school that will be visited, to be assisted by the assistant team leader. The team leader is expected to come up with the school that will be visited. The team leader is expected to report how activities go in their LGA to us.

Assistant Team Leader: to assist the team leader and support the team.

Media Officer: responsible for taking activities to social media as it happens in their school

General Secretary whose role is to document activities and provide report to the team leader

In overall, an LGA would have a maximum of 8 volunteers, 2 for each category. An LGA will have two different teams visiting different schools and a team is expected to visit 4 different schools within this period

Through the Program, Volunteers will be required to sort out schools to visit as we will give the methods through which occasions will be sorted out by a Team in an LGA. This campaign is targeted at both private and public schools in the state and should take 1-2hrs per day per week.

Particular parts and obligations of volunteers will further be communicated to them after selection.

NIG AT 57: WE HAVE MORE TO GAIN TOGETHER THAN DIVIDED - AMBODE

 Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Sunday emphasized the need for Nigeria to remain united, saying there was more to gain in being together as one nation than dissolving as different independent entities. 

Speaking at a special thanksgiving service to commemorate Nigeria's 57th Independence Anniversary held at Lagos House Chapel in Alausa, Ikeja, Governor Ambode said it was important for Nigerians to realise the fact that the country's diversity is a strength in itself which makes the country a truly special place.

He said a moment of reflection and retrospection would reveal the need for Nigerians to be thankful to God for His grace, blessings and mercy over the country.

According to the Governor, "That we still have a country we can call Nigeria today is a proof of the divine hands of God in our being together as one. 

"We must therefore reflect on our journey so far and come to the inevitable realisation that we have much more to gain as one nation than as different independent entities. 

"Our diversity is a strength in itself and what makes our country a truly special place. We are a nation blessed by God. We have been blessed with enormous natural, human and material resources," Governor Ambode said.

The Governor, who recalled the terrible natural disasters that had happened in different parts of the world in recent times, said the fact that Nigeria had been preserved from such adversities confirmed that the country is favoured by God and that as Nigerians thank the Almighty for what he has done, more blessings would come upon the country.

While noting the prosperity and growth that Lagos had witnessed, the Governor said it was a thing of concern that most of the States of the federation were struggling to survive, saying it was in the interest of the country for all the States to be viable.

He said: "To the glory of God, our State, Lagos is blessed and its future is brighter than we can imagine. We cannot however be satisfied and happy in a situation where many other States are far behind and are struggling to survive. 

"It is in our interest that the wind of prosperity blows across the length and breadth of our nation and the prosperity that we have in Lagos spillover to other States.

"As we celebrate independence, we have seen what Lagos is right now and it can only get better. I just want to appeal that the people should be patient with the country Nigeria. 

"The same thing that is happening in Lagos will happen across the length and breath of Nigeria and that is what we are working towards. When my neighbors are good, I am better off; when other parts of the country are prosperous, I am better off," Governor Ambode said.

In his sermon, Provincial Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in charge of Province 36, Pastor Tunde Netufo commended Governor Ambode for his various initiatives at reducing traffic congestion and incidences of traffic robberies, among others, saying the State was being governed rightly.

Speaking on the theme: "God's Greatness in Our Land," Pastor Netufo urged Nigerians to hearken to God and make it a priority to love like never before and eschew bitterness, corruption and every form of evil.

He said: "For God's greatness to manifest in the land, the people must be committed and faithful both to God and civic responsibilities and they must eschew corruption and social vices.

"The people must partner with government to bring our desires to past. For instance, people must pay their taxes and embrace hardwork," Pastor Netufo said.

SDG 3 : BETTY AKEREDOLU LAUNCHES BRECAN IN LAGOS,SEEKS A COLLECTIVE FIGHT AGAINST KILLER DISEASE

The First Lady of Ondo State and the founder of Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) has called for all hands to be on deck in the fight against breast cancer.

Speaking at the official launch and fundraising dinner for the Lagos Chapter of BRECAN at the Sheraton Hotels and Towers, Lagos, Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu called for support of individuals and government to ensure that women do not die needlessly because of breast cancer, stating that the time has come for everybody to play their part in the effort to add knowledge and eradicate the scourge of cancer.

“We don’t have to fold our hands; I think it is about time we begin to take part in the effort to add knowledge and eradicate the scourge of cancer so that our women do not die needlessly because they do not have money to access treatment.

“For us to do so much, we need money to be able to comb the nooks and crannies of this state so that our women are aware that if they do nothing about that painless lump, their survival is not guaranteed. Awareness is key; let us all support ourselves and know that women are surviving cancer if you do the right thing at the right time”, she stressed.

In her lecture, the Guest Lecturer, Mrs. Olufunmi Olateju emphasized the role of diet in attaining good health while also highlighting some factors that helps in preventing cancer which include physical exercise, healthy eating habits among others.

“A lot of people don’t like to do exercise; be physically active as part of everyday life. Avoid sugary foods and eat lean meat”, she added while analyzing the impact of food choices on a cancer patient and also the need to get expert advice.

In her own remark, the National President of BRECAN, Mrs. Juliet Ogbogu expressed joy at the official launch of the chapter while applauding Arabinrin Akeredolu for taking the initiative to establish BRECAN 20 years ago.

“I want to thank God that BRECAN is spreading like wild fire. She did it, she survived it and she is still counting. BRECAN has gone international. We are raising funds today in order to be able to create awareness. I am happy that chapters are springing up. We now have chapters in 7 states of the federation”, Mrs. Ogbogu reiterates.

In attendance at this epoch making event was the wife of Lagos state Governor , Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, the wife of Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Chief Mrs. Ajewole Ajayi, the wife of Ondo State SSG, Mrs. Jumoke Abegunde among other top dignitaries.

Giving an emotional speech, Salmon Nurat, a 30 year old breast cancer survivor who used the opportunity to thank Mrs. Akeredolu for founding BRECAN in order to give hope to patients charged the government to make radiotherapy machines available so that cancer patient can access help.

In her own remark, Funmi Adefila Osiegbu, another breast cancer survivor admonished that a total lifestyle change is required and that eating right and exercise is a must.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Chairperson of BRECAN, Lagos State, Mrs. Vivian Okorie affirmed that the official launch of the state chapter was indeed special as it is a movement directed towards bringing about change to humanity.

According to her, the scourge of breast cancer is no longer news as it affects both the young and the old, thus the need to collectively fight back.While calling for supports in its bid to continually create awareness and advocate for resources and facilities that will aid in quick recovery of women suffering from breast cancer, Mrs. Okorie enjoined everybody to be a part of the fight back.

The newly inaugurated state executives include Vivian Okorie, chairperson, Prisca Attah, Secretary, Henrietta Tommey, Fin. Secretary, Jennifer Seidu, Treasurer, and Emeka Ojeh, PRO.

SDG 3 :MRS AKEREDOLU REITERATES COMMITMENT TO BREAST CANCER AWARENESS IN NIGERIA

The Founder of Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) and the wife of Ondo State Governor, Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu had reassured Nigerians of BRECAN’s commitment to eliminating breast Cancer as a life threatening disease, through public education, patient support, advocacy and research across Nigeria in the face of numerous challenges in the country.

Mrs Akeredolu made the vow at the BRECAN Centre Ibadan, Oyo state while speaking at the SERVICE OF SONGS organized by BRECAN in honour of a departed BRECAN’s foot Soldier Late Mrs Ruth Olufunke Oyewole Jp (Nee Arogbo) who died after battling with this life threatening disease.

Mrs Akeredolu who said the fight required sustainable awareness and cautious effect of people with like passion also called on Government at all level to keep voting money for the course.

“We really need to intensify awareness creation and it has to be sustained it is not just a one off thing, awareness needs money not one person’s thing, not just me, we need more foot soldiers, gradually we are increasing in numbers, we fan out into the nooks and crannies of this area and all over the country. Today we have seven chapters, we are launching Lagos tomorrow.

Gradually we will be able to convince our people that this is a medical issue. Women are having breast cancer but they most not die for it.

We live here to go and lobby US Senators in America, you know why we lobby them? To keep on voting money for breast Cancer so that our women will not die, it pains me when our women die at the peak of their productive age” she concluded in tears.

Mrs Akeredolu pledged to keep on preaching about that pathway that made her survive which according to her is going to hospital as soon as a lump, discharge from the nipples, or reddish spot is observed during the breast self examination and called on Nigeria women to always pay attention to health education.

Until her death Mrs Oyewole was a Chief Superintendent of Immigration. She was aged 51 years.

In a tribute, the national President of BRECAN Mrs Juliet Ogbuogu said Mrs Oyewole had a life well spent in the service of God and humanity as a Christian and described her as a virtuous woman, a committed Christian, a caring and loving mother who was bold and courageous adding that she has gone to be with the lord.

In a vote of thanks on behalf the family, the son of the deceased Mr Demola Oyewole thanked Ondo State First Lady and BRECAN for rendering emotional and other forms of support to their mother while she was battling with Breast Cancer, and prayed God to reward them aboundantly.

SDG 6 : CLEANEDGE SOLUTIONS DETERMINE TO TACKLE OYO ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES

A private Initiative responsible for clean environment, CleanEdge Solutions has pledged to tackle the numerous environmental challenges currently confronting Oyo State in Nigeria through its clean Oyo programme.

In a Statement made available to Devcom Nigeria,signed by the D.G of CleanEdge Solutions,Mr. Tope Ogunweide,the organization reiterated its commitment  towards ensuring a clean Oyo State.

 This Initiative according to the statement is the organization's own way of working towards the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to be achieved by year 2030,particularly goal 6 which takes about access to water and clean environment.

 The statement read in part;"Back in 2015, when the United Nations established a set of shared goals and targets for achieving sustainable development around the world, the development community has been energized, excited but a little bit wary. While the ambition contained in the Global Goals is high, the challenge is very high as well. 

We do not yet know how things will unfold, but one thing is for sure: the scale, scope and complexity of the economic, environmental and social transformation to come will be such that no one sector- government, businesses, civil society or academia- will be able to manage the development alone. 

We are going to need some coalition that will bring different sectors together if we are to achieve the set goals.

Civil society organizations, with their capacity for increasing accountability and promoting development plays a very important role if partnership with both governments and businesses can be fostered. By sharing information, resources, activities and capabilities, we can achieve things together that we can never achieve alone.

At CleanEdge Solutions, we are already busy planning strategic partnership, and a particular priority for us now is to improve the cleanliness of Oyo state. SDG 4: LAGOS ASSEMBLY TASKS CORPORATE ORGANIZATIONS ON PUBLIC SCHOOLS

The Lagos State House of Assembly has tasked corporate organizations on the need to help develop public schools in the state just as a lawmaker in the Assembly, Hon. Olanrewaju Ogunyemi donated a sum of N300,000 to the Lagos State Model College, Badore, Ajah.

Ogunyemi, who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, made the donation on behalf of his daughter, Dr. Olubukola Ogunyemi, who was a student of the school, during an unscheduled visit to the school by the committee as the new session began on Monday.

The lawmaker, who is representing Ojo Constituency 2 in the assembly, however used the opportunity to call on private organisations in the state to support the government on education.

"Look at what we have done on Security Trust Fund in Lagos State, why can't we have Education Endowment Trust Fund.

"I have always said that personnel is very important in developing a nation and the kind of people you shun out would determine what your development would be like.

"I would keep telling them that the people we churn out from our public schools would still be part of most corporate organizations. GT Bank, Daystar Church and some individuals such as Chief Adebutu Kensington and Mrs. Alakija have been supporting the state government on education.

"We are calling on more corporate organizations and individuals to support the government on education, and look into our riverine areas to support education there," he said.

Ogunyemi added in an interview with journalists that it was important to address the issue of furniture in public schools and that and that it was discovered during the visit that more furniture were still needed in the model college in Badore.

According to him, the supply of furniture to schools is ongoing and "we saw that many schools got new furniture during the holidays. I think it is an ongoing process and we told Badore that they would get more."

He revealed that he was moved to donate the sum after going round the hostels, and seeing some falling ceilings.

He said: "the Principal of the Junior School and a teacher in the Senior School said that with N150,000 each they would fix the ceilings. So, I decided to donate N300,000 to the two schools on behalf of my daughter, Dr. Olubukola Ogunyemi, who also attended the school for her secondary education."

The politician added that the committee deliberately decided to visit Lagos State Model College, Badore (Junior and Senior) in Ajah, Lagos Island on the first day of resumption to assess the facilities there.

The students, he said, had been away for long vacation, while stressing that they started resuming to the boarding house on Sunday and that the committee members felt that they should go round to see the state of facilities there.

He explained that this was in line with the determination of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of the state to renovate and improve facilities in public schools

"We saw some of the renovations that were done in the school. We went round the schools and we discovered that the children and the teachers were in high spirit. We also saw some of the children resuming.

"I think it is all about enhancing the confidence of the people in our public schools. What we have seen is that the government is leaving no stone unturned and we have seen areas, where they have made efforts. We have also seen areas that must be improved upon. What we found was above average," he stated.

On the issue of security, the lawmaker recalled that a couple of days back, the Deputy Governor of the state, Mrs. Oluranti Adebule, who is also the state Commissioner for Education, called a stakeholders meeting of parents and managers of schools in the state before resumption.

He emphasised that one of the issues raised at the meeting had to do with security, and that the state government has put measures in place with the Nigerian Police to ensure that all the public schools, particularly those with boarding facilities, were given adequate security on 24 hours basis.

"The principal of the school said that the school is secured. Also, the issue of shanties around the school came up at the stakeholders meeting and we noticed that in Badore.

"Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has given express directive that all the shanties around the schools in the state should be pulled down to ensure security in the schools.

"The government is very sensitive and everybody is on red alert on security in the schools. Even the students are also sensitive on this and we are good to go for the new session.

"On improving infrastructure in the schools, in the last budget, the government pumped about N10 billion into the system and that is what is resulting in the massive renovations in the schools.

"Also, about N6 billion is being pumped into this year's budget that is resulting in the massive renovation exercise that is going on in the schools with the directive of the government.

"However, we will keep calling on corporate organizations and individuals to come in to help the government on education," he stated.

Earlier, while addressing parents and students in the school, Ogunyemi said that the committee was on the visit to see what the school looks like on the first day of resumption.

He reiterated that the state government was very committed to giving the best to the education sector in the state, and that the visit to the model college would be the first by the committee.

"We went round some of our model colleges over a year ago, we looked at the facilities there and saw that there was need for the government to do some turn around.

"We have since been to the Model College at Meiran and we are very satisfied with the turn around that is there now. Today, we are here on routine inspection as it is constitutionally stipulated that we do oversight functions.

"We are happy that some of you parents have been bringing in your children since yesterday. We thank you for your belief in public schools and in our government.

"We want to assure you that the government would continue to do the best for education in the state. We will look at the hostels, we would look at the dining rooms and the environment," he said.

The lawmaker told the audience that the committee would look at the areas to be improved upon in the school and get back to the government and the Deputy Governor of the state in particular as the Commissioner for Education.

He explained further that the reason the committee goes round on oversight functions was to ensure that the budget it approves for education in the state is judiciously put into use.

He said: "We are satisfied with what the state government has done so far, but we want to see what has been done in Badore, we want to see areas we can improve upon.

"Security has also become an issue in our public schools and the government is not resting on it's oars on this. We want to assure you that your children are safe, they are secure and there is a collaboration between our state government and the Nigerian Police.

"We want to call on you to support the state government by paying your taxes. We are also calling on those of us who are close to churches/ mosques and corporate organizations to influence them to support the government on education.

"Some of the children here today may not necessarily work for the government, they would work with corporate organizations such as banks and other companies. So, we must invest in education, we want to appreciate you for given your children quality education."

One of the parents in the school, Mr. Olubodun Alausa, while commending the efforts of the government on model colleges in the state, urged the government to ensure that shanties around schools were removed as he said that they harbour criminals.

He also called on the government to provide drainages around the school so that the water could go into the canals, and pleaded with the government to ensure more security around the school as he revealed that armed robbers once escaped around the area after a robbery operation recently.

Another parent, who simply gave his name as Evangelist Adeyemi, spoke about the environment of the schools.

He said that one of his friends, who has a daughter in the school, once told him that his daughter and others were called 'toilet girls' in the school as they clean the toilet always.

He told the committee that the school should arrange for people to take care of the toilets, adding that even if the students would assist, they should not be called such names.

Ogunyemi later promised the parents that all the issues would be addressed and called on them to pay their taxes regularly to help the government have more money for development.

Other members of the committee on the visit included Hon. Akeem Shokunle from Oshodi/Isolo Constituency 1 and Hon. Jude Idimogu from Oshodi/Isolo Constituency 2.

How I Got Nine Distinctions In SSCE - Joseph Lambo

His academic attainment in the Senior Secondary School Examination (SSSCE) is for the records.

17-year old Joseph Lambo started taking his education serious right from his kindergarten days, years after, he has continued to be the best in any examination he sits for.

He had A1 in Marketing, Further mathematics, General mathematics, English Language, Civic Education, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Computer Studies.

In this interview he granted Devcom Nigeria in the presence of his mother, Olubunmi Lambo, Joseph spoke about his strategy that has earned him distinction and his planned course of study.

He also paid glowing tributes to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Adegbola for their moral and marital support.

What can you say about your academic achievement?


My name is Joseph Lambo, but i give all glory to God over the academic achievement. Most of the time, when I feel that something is difficult and unattainable, I just pray to God and I believe that God always helps me to achieve it. I have always been coming first in school. The Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) was like a challenge because all the examination, where I had been getting the best results were internal examinations, people did not know that I could repeat the same feat in an external examination. The best result in my school last year was seven As and it was a challenge for me to surpass his result so that people could know that it was not only in internal examinations that I could do well. Apart from that, I had to read hard, sometimes I sleep at 4am and wake up at 6am just because i was reading. I was also able to succeed through the help of my friends and colleagues and I thank my parents for their financial and mental support throughout my entire school. These were the things that helped me to achieve my results. I also give thanks to God and my parents for helping me to achieve the results.


Apart from academics, what other things do you do?

Apart from academics, I watch and play football. This even helps me in my academics. I am motivated to work hard by watching footballers because the amount they earn is unbelievable. Sometimes, I just feel that if I work hard I could be known or be celebrated as much as them. Apart from football, I am also good in computer system. I used to make games at a period, but I had to stop so that I could put in more efforts on my academics. I still hope to use my knowledge of computer and coding in the future so that it could help me after finishing school.

What were the roles your parents played in achieving the result and what career do you hope to pursue in the future?


From primary school, my parents have always been a determining factor in all my achievements. My father and mother always spend time to help me in my assignment and they paid for one lesson or the other for me apart from paying my school fees. The support and the motivation they have been giving me are helpful. I don't think I could have done what I did without them.

Initially, I wanted to study computer engineering, but after researching a bit into the course, I discovered that I could learn about it outside the university. The course that actually appeals to me is medicine and I would study computer engineering outside the university. Having knowledge in the two fields would be helpful to me because the world is moving and we cannot do without computer engineers and doctors. So, having knowledge in the two fields would help and assist me.


We have had situations where some private schools assist students to pass their external examinations, what is your experience like and have you written JAMB exam?


I have written JAMB and I scored 275, but the computer I used had problem and I could not start until 30 minutes after others had started because of several problems. Also, there were errors in my English Language paper, the nearest in meaning was opposite in meaning and I lost about 40 points because of that mistake. My school of choice is the University of Lagos and post-UTME is not yet out there. There was power problem in the centre, where I sat for JAMB and to even connect the server was hard due to the administrator, there were so many problems at the center. I really tried my best in the examination, but there was nothing I could do again. I am now 17 years old.

On examinations malpractice, my school actually organized a long seminar on that. My principal, Mrs. Onochie is a very religious person as she is a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG). She is against malpractice and she organized a seminar about it for us. A school in the area once  had its external examination cancelled over malpractice, so she does not tolerate it at all. The distance between students during examinations was very far. We were on our own, she only allow us to help each other before the examinations and this made us to work hard. The result of the examination was generally good in my school. However, no student or teacher would assist you, we were not allowed to communicate with anybody during examinations. The only  role my school played was to teach us well before examinations and they taught us how to deal with stress and handle examinations.


Have you applied for scholarship awards?


I have applied for scholarship awards within and outside the country and I have written many examinations to that effect. I have been reading since I finished. I still have some scholarship awards examinations to write in October and November and if they work out, I hope to have full scholarship awards to study in the United States of America (USA).



How many students had nine As in your school?


I was the only one, who had nine As there, three other students had seven As, while about five others had five As. But nobody failed in my school, but all of us had results that could give us university admission.


How do you normally achieve your goals?


I believe that one should set goals and be determined to achieve your goals in life. Just try to be the best and don't waste your potentials. Nothing can stop me from being the best. When I was in year nine, I was not a sport person and someone once said that football was not for me, so I decided to go into the game to prove the person wrong. There is nothing I cannot do if I set my mind on it. I was the captain of the soccer team in the school then. So, the main mentality one should have is to be the best in whatever you do and don't settle for anything less.

What can you say about your son, Joseph Lambo?


We thank God he was able to achieve this, parents should help their children to be the best in whatever they do. When Joseph was a child, he was always serious with his books. Prior to when he started his kindergarten, he would hold his crayon and eraser and once he wakes up, he would ask for his materials.

That was even when he was as young as a year old. He has always been the best in school since his days at Unique Children School, Omole Estate, Lagos. Right from his days in kindergarten to primary school he was always the best graduating student. He started to be the best again from year seven at Unique Heights, which is the secondary school, till he graduated. So, when the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) came out, it was not a surprise because we had been expecting him to be the best. He represented the school in many events, where he won many medals, but all the same, all glory goes to God.


Is the performance hereditary?


I would say it is hereditary because my father in law, the late Dr. Joseph Lambo was the best in his field as a medical doctor. My son was named after him. Also, my husband was the best graduating student in his time in the University of Lagos. My other children are like that too.
