INT'L YOUTH DAY: LAGOS STATE CHILDREN'S PARLIAMENT ELECT NEW OFFICERS

The Lagos State Children's Parliament has elected new officers into various positions to represent the interest of the children in the business of governance in the state.

 The election which was 15th session of its kind in Lagos State took place at the Lateef Jakande Hall,(old chamber) of the Lagos Assembly Complex yesterday in commemoration of the year 2017 International Youth's Day.


In the process of the election, nominations were made for various positions, and the nominees were called out while the members elect were asked to queue behind their candidate  for counting.


At the end of the voting exercise, Rt Hon. Ikuyinminu Raphael emerged as the speaker of the parliament, Hon. Komolafe Taiwo who coincidentally happened to be a son of the former Lagos Deputy Speaker in the 7th Assembly, (Hon. Kolawole Taiwo) ,emerged as the Deputy Speaker,while Hon. Adeleye Joseph was elected the House Leader,all of them for a tenure of 2-year single term.


In his remark,the newly elected Speaker,pledged his allegiance to Lagos State government, while promising to ensure better life for children in the state, "our work is to ensure that children in Lagos State live a better life,during my tenure, no child will have any reason to go and steal in the market and get burnt", he promised.


The 57 children (including the elected officers) who were all bellow 17 years of age,representing each of  the 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs in Lagos,according to the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, went through a rigorous process of selection in their various schools before being picked to represent their constituency.


Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Pham. Uzamat Akinbile- Yusuf said, the tradition of having the children represented in the government started since year 2003,and the essence was for the government of Lagos state to run an inclusive government that will give a voice to the children.


The Commissioner noted that the platform is necessary to begin to prepare them for leadership roles and to make them participate in political affairs particularly on issues that concerns them as children.


Pham. Uzamat added that the Children's Parliament give the children a deep sense of belonging and inclusion for them to participate in the process of governance and national development.


She however admonished the newly elected officers to respect the rules and process of the parliament, ensuring that the rights and interest of the children are well protected, speaking for the vulnerables and the poorest among them.

On his part,the Chairman House Committee on Youth, Sports and Social Development, Hon Adedamola Richard Kasunmu,representing Ikeja constituency 11 at the Lagos State House of Assembly, advised the children to take their studies seriously and to also contribute their quota to the development of Lagos State and the nation at large.
