Cameroon: the African Development Bank supports phase 3 of the Ring Road for almost 180 million euros

The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank approved, Wednesday, December 18, 2019, a loan of 255 million euros for the financing of the “Support Program for Transport - phase 3 - construction of the Ring Road- tranche 2 Bad funding ”.
The Ring-Road covers approximately 365 km and crosses five of the seven departments of the North West Region. The road also includes several connections to the Nigerian border, notably from Misaje.
The program's target area affects the North-West region, whose economic potential extends in particular to agriculture, including its livestock and tourism component. The objective is to contribute to the mobility of goods and people in order to consolidate the foundations of strong and sustainable growth, as well as to facilitate trade at national level and with neighboring Nigeria.
Improving the quality of road infrastructure will thus ensure a good quality transport service, and contribute to better living conditions for the populations.
Racine Kane, Managing Director Central Africa for the Bank explained that "the importance of the project, through its capacity to open up production basins, to connect the two parts of Cameroon, to ensure a connection with Nigeria, and to improve the tourism in the area. Procedures for empowering women along infrastructure projects have also been integrated ”. Because, he explained, no less than 206 km of related roads are planned with this project.
The financing of the project mobilized several partners and was made possible thanks to a loan from the African Development Bank window, in the amount of 179.60 million euros, a loan from the "Africa Growing Together Fund" (AGTF) of 42.60 million euros and a contribution from the government, for 37.52 million euros.
The implementation of almost all of the activities financed by the first tranche of the "AfDB loan", effectively started in February 2019. The implementation of this operation is scheduled to end in October 2024.
In view of the results recorded in the previous phases of the project, the majority of the members of the Board approved this third phase. They expressed all the hope for this project, whose "regional integration potential is enormous".
